DEAR INDUSTRY: UFO FEV.

Posted by THEWHELMING in Interview, LIFE, VIDEO

I started a new video series called Dear Industry with my buddy Eph, Red Kind Media.  I shot a personal video on Fev back in March.  Being a photographer in this industry I meet many different people everyday.  Artists, designers, musicians, and the list keeps going.  I find every one of my conversations with these professionals fascinating and I wanted to start sharing their stories with you guys.

DEAR INDUSTRY

Artists, creators, performers, entrepreneurs. They share their thoughts, beginnings, experiences and dreams. Dear Industry interviews and documents young professionals to understand what it takes to make one’s mark.  This is their open letter.  Here’s UFO FEV:

Born and raised on the East Side of Harlem, New York — Anthony Ortiz or better known as UFO Fev shares his experiences and how he found his passion.

Filmed & edited by Andy Hur.

Songs in this video:
1. Bad Man’s World
2. Winehouse

You can download ‘The Return Flight’ EP for free here.

Stay tuned for more videos via Dear Industry.  We have a few planned out to start shooting once I get back into NYC.  Don’t forget to LIKE, FOLLOW & SUBSCRIBE

GROWTH.

Down the Hallway. | February 2013.

“You will either step forward into growth
or you will step back into safety.”

                                                                         - Abraham Maslow

I’ve been considering moving to a whole different environment. Away from the city, away from my friends and away from everything that I’m comfortable with. Growing up in New York City has exposed me to a whole bunch of different people and lifestyles. But the way things are lining up, I’m coming closer to making a decision. This has been one of the most challenging decisions I had to make. This will make or break my career and without a question, change my life. Hopefully after April I can stand 100% behind what I decide to do.

I hope everyone out there are make well thought-out decisions about their career’s, relationships and everything that fits in and out of the 9-5.

Whatever you decide to do; do it for the right reasons. Make sure you’re 100% behind your choice. And don’t forget to give it your best. Can’t blame anyone else after that.

MONTRÉAL, CANADA.

Posted by THEWHELMING in LIFE

Driving upstate New York we spotted this interesting truck stop: Betty Beavers.  Glad we made a group decision and decided not to eat there.

To get on the road and get to Canada on schedule we rushed to meet out check-out time.  The night before we did as anyone from the city would do if they were staying a night in Albany.  We went to Super Walmart around 11 at night.  In the rush to leave with a bit of rest, I left my camera on the side of the couch.  Already an hour into the drive we contacted the hotel and they held it till we got back into the States.  They let me pick the restaurant.  I picked Friendly’s, thought the ice cream would cheer me up.  It did.  So the entire weekend I shot with my Canon G12.

Graffiti is a huge thing out in Montréal.  Can’t turn a block without something being written on the walls.

Trying to figure out where we are.  Since we didn’t have any cash we decided not to take the Canadian Metro.  Not a huge area, it was a nice walk.

We waited about 40 mins in the cold Canadian winter to try this Japanese restaurant called Kazu ($$).  And it was worth it.  If you’re ever in the downtown part of Montréal, try this place out.  Really good.  It’s a really small restaurant.  People are shoulder to shoulder but the staff is upbeat and friendly.  Cash only.  They do accept USD but no change.

I forgot what this was but its fish.  Probably not my favorite and it was a bit salty.  After the three dishes this came out last.  Not the best way to end the course.  Still good but after the everything else, it was a bit of a downer.

MOHONK PRESERVE.

Posted by THEWHELMING in LIFE

Finally catching up on my life.  Two weeks ago I went on a road trip to Montréal Canada with three of my friends.  The trip started at 6 in the morning.  Here’s Cookie (the Yorkie), watching us pack the car up.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_01

We headed to Mohonk Preserve to meet up with a buddy of ours to start the trip off with a hike.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_02

I learned a few things about myself on this hike.  I’m out of shape and the shoes I wore was a huge mistake.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_03

Didn’t realize that there was still snow up in the mountains.  I wore a pair of old sneakers.  The grips on the bottom were completely fated.  A uphill walk up with snow + no grips on the bottom of my shoes was equivalent to walking on a frozen lake, on a slight incline.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_04

Given I’ve been lacking on the exercising part and I’ve been living a very unhealthy lifestyle leading up to this hike.  I need to change a few things.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_10

After a while I slowed down and just started taking in the view.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_05

Ding.  Yup, her name is Ding.  She’s a friend of mine that I met back in high school.  She’s one of the three friends that I drove up with to Canada.

A snowman we had time to build.  Ding, Dave and Kevin.  The three I went with to Canada. (A bunch of jerks.  They wouldn’t let me drive for some reason.  No trust in the relationshop!)

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_11

After coming down hill we reached a frozen lake with a hut on the side.  We stopped for lunch.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_12

The view in front of the hut.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_13

Probably would have made our packs lighter if we made the sandwiches instead of bring everything.  Next time we’ll plan this out better.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_14

Heading back.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_15

Heading down.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_17

If you’re going to hike this trail.  Make sure to mind the rocks.  A few of the rocks are loose.  Watch your step.

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_18

mohonk-preserve_andy-hur_20

I’ll post the rest of the road trip tomorrow!  I’ll be heading to a PDN event tonight.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM.

Posted by THEWHELMING in LIFE

Last week my awesome sister planned my Mother’s birthday.  She took us to a restaurant out in Long Island, N.Y.  Honestly the best seafood and American Cuisine I’ve had in a long time.  If you ever get a chance to check out Prime out in the Huntington area.  Please do.
